What are the differences between an Excel file and a CSV file?

CSV(Comma Separated Values) files can be used for a variety of purposes. However, in this blog, you will be learning to create CSV files for developing Gmail Contacts using MS Excel. Here, I will be using the Excel sheet to create CSV files. Using the CSV file, you can develop a format for importing data.

What are CSV files?

CSV files refer to comma-separated values that can be further presented in tabular format. CSV files can be used with various spreadsheet programs like MS-Excel, Google Sheet. Also, it is used for exporting a high volume of data to a more concentrated database for companies or any other organization.

How are CSV files similar to xlsx files?

Looking at some of the similarities between CSV files and xlsx files, they are as follows:

· Both can be opened in spreadsheet programs.

· Both store data in tabular formats (i.e. columns and rows).

· Both data can be manipulated using functions and features found in Excel.

How are CSV files different from xlsx files?

Although there are some similar features between these two, there are many differences to be considered. Most people tend to believe that CSV and xlsx are the same as when you open both files i.e. CSV and xlsx, it will display the same result. However, these two files are completely different from each other. Some differences are mentioned in the following table.

Stepwise procedure to make a CSV file

Step 1: Write the name of the employee/friends.

Step 2: Write the email addresses in column B parallel to the name in column A.

Step 3: Write phone number according to name and email in column C.

Step 4: Make sure your data is in the format as shown in the image below.

Step 5: Go to ‘File’, click on the ‘Save As…’.

Step 6: Now, a dialogue box appears. Here, choose ‘CSV UTF-8’ on file format as shown in the image below, and provide a name for this folder. Then, click on the ‘Save’ button.

Finally. now, your file is saved in CSV format.
